2006 Field Trip Schedule

 


Harriman Hikers:

We hike each and every Sunday, rain or shine, year-round. We don't have a "schedule" of destinations, each Sunday the hike destination is determined by the hike leader based on weather conditions, group size, abilities of hikers that day and available parking for destination(s) under consideration.

We hike mostly in Harriman SP NY, though at times we go to destinations in North NJ such as Greenwood Lake, (W Milford) Sterling Forest, Waywayanda and trails in the lower Hudson Valley such as Black Rock Reservation and Storm King area.

Harriman Hikers is a Hiking Club for singles of all ages who meet every Sunday at 11:30 am in the South Parking Lots, Field B-1, of the Ramapo College of New Jersey on Route 202 in Mahwah, NJ. parking lot map:

DIRECTIONS TO RAMAPO COLLEGE IN MAHWAH, NJ:

From the South take Route 17 to Mahwah. Exit to Route 202 south (left). The college is 1.5 miles from Route 17.

From Route 287 take Exit 58 in Oakland, then follow Route 202 north about 5 miles to the college.

From Rockland County take Route 202 through Suffern and continue on 202 to the college in Mahwah.

From the NY Thruway take the exit to 17 south, bear left to stay on 17 into NJ, then the first exit is Route 202. Turn left to take 202 south to the college.

**There are two traffic lights by the college; coming from the north (Route 17) take the second light at the college. Coming from the south take the first light.

Look for the group in the South Parking Lots B-1. If you use the main entrance just take the first three right turns, around the gymnasium, to get to the South Parking lots. MAP

Meet-up: Doubletree Hotel

When: Saturday, May 6, 5:00pm

Bob Gawel, formerly of the Trail Mix Hiking Club; a long time area hiker and
veteran of many night hikes will be leading a moonlight hike the evening of
Saturday, May 6th, 2006.

Cost: FREE

Meeting place: back of parking lot of the Doubletree Hotel Rt. 17 South just
south of Rt. 202 in Mahwah, NJ

Meeting Time: 5:00pm

Plan: Form carpools at Doubletree Hotel to depart to trailhead by 5:30. Plan
for a moderate (3-5 mile total) hike, with intention to make a scenic
overlook for sunset 8pm. With this in mind a prompt departure no later than
5:30 pm is imperative.

Hike and destination: Hike Leader's choice based on prevailing conditions on
Saturday.

Event duration: Last time we were back at the cars around 11pm. But please
dont be in a hurry to get back.

What to bring: flash light(s) and/or lantern(s), hiking boots, casual seasonal
outdoor clothing for a moderate hike, sweater (evening may be chilly) food and
beverage(s) of your choice to cookout and share. Please bring paper plates,
cups and plastic utensils to share. Camp grills, cooking forks and serving
plates to share are helpful as well.

Moon phase: May 6th is beginning of the moon's 3rd quarter, rising 1:35pm,
so the moon should be high in the night sky while we are hiking.

Rain: Rain existing or eminent cancels the hike. In such case we will post
notice of cancellation on the invitation page:

as far in advance as possible. Please check the website before you
leave if weather is questionable. In the event of rain, hike will be
rescheduled for the following
weekend May 13th, 2006.

The Friends of Sparta Mountain are hosting our Second Annual Sparta Mountain Day on May 20, 2006 at Ryker’s Lake and at The Edison Monument in Sparta, NJ.

The purpose of Sparta Mountain Day 2006 is to have fun with outdoor activities while fostering an environmental awareness, and a conservation ethic, while preserving our wildlife and our natural systems in our community.

It will be a day for walking in the woods, discovering our unique ecosystems and understanding why we should help protect it.

Environmental educators and historians from The NJ Audubon Society, The NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Rutgers University, etc. will participate.

The programs will include:

*Birding and Interpretive Walks.

*The Geology of the Sparta Mountain Region.

*Raptor presentations.

*The Endangered Bog Turtle.

*Thomas Edison: The Sparta Mountain Mining Experiment (1890-1900).

*Hikes in the area.

Please send an email to mmorrison@nac.net by May 5th to register for these programs since we will be limiting the number of participants.

There will be bird walks starting at 8:30am and ending at 10am. These walks will be led by NJ Audubon and NJ DEP birding experts. You will be notified of the meeting location upon registration.

The other programs will take place from 11am-2pm. The event locations of these sessions will vary on Sparta Mountain. You will be informed of the meeting locations upon registration.

We will also be offering hikes led by NY/NJ Trail Conference Trail Leaders. These hikes will last approximately 2 hours and will take place at 11am and 1pm. You will be informed of the meeting location upon registration.

It is strongly recommended that all participants wear hiking boots and appropriate hiking gear and bring a whistle and a cell phone. Also, all participants should bring water and a snack in a small knapsack or belt pack. Rain, lightning or thunder will cancel activities. If we cancel I will send out an email to those who have registered by 7am on May 20th. The rain date is May 21, 2006.

Attendance will be limited and will be offered on a first come – first served basis. This is a no cost event. Please email Mitch Morrison at mmorrison@nac.net to register by April 30, 2006 (or earlier) for the various programs and their times. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
