FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT STATE PARK (FORMERLY MOHANSIC STATE PARK)
Westchester County, NY

Directions:

Taconic Parkway north to the exit for FDR park which is well marked on the parkway. Follow signs. You can see the park's lakes from the Taconic Parkway (on the right -- east side).

Geology:

Waters from Mohansic Lake flow into Crom Pond and then to the Muscoot River, then into Croton Reservoir.

History:

The land was acquired in two parcels. The area to the south of the lake was acquired in 1908 fro the New York State Training School for Boys. The north parcel was acquired in 1909 by the State Hospital Commission. With the Croton Reservoir, concern that a hospital in the area might pollute the waters helped Westchester County acquire the area in 1922.

1923  --  the commission started a new nursery growing some 20,000 species of pines, spruces and other evergreens. As the trees grew large enough, they would be transferred as needed to other Westchester parks. (French 1925:981)

During the Great Depression, there was a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp here and the park buildings reflect this.

In 1957 the state acquired the property.

In 1982 the name of the park was changed from Mohansic State Park to FDR State Park.
